Goals & Result Areas

Houston Endowment seeks to preserve valuable natural resources and cultivate healthy urban environments so that all residents can thrive as the region grows. Grantseekers should select one of the following four areas as the primary focus of their application.

Air: Houston Endowment seeks to protect the health of greater Houston’s residents by contributing to improvements in local air quality.

The Foundation supports efforts to

  • Understand and communicate the relationship between local air quality and health effects, estimate future risks and assess opportunities for improvement;
  • Encourage stakeholders to advance policy and practice change; and
  • Engage communities in efforts to protect personal health by improving air quality.

Land: Houston Endowment seeks to sustain lands that benefit the people of greater Houston, including parks that support recreation and connectivity and natural landscapes that reduce urban flooding and protect air and water resources.

The Foundation supports efforts to

  • Understand and communicate the availability and condition of local parks and natural landscapes, estimate future risks and assess opportunities for improvement;
  • Acquire, enhance and ensure access to parks, emphasizing underserved areas;
  • Leverage public and private resources to protect valuable lands; and
  • Strengthen the capacity of organizations that carry out strategic land protection efforts.

Water: Houston Endowment seeks to contribute to improvements in water quality, water supply and flood mitigation in local waterways to protect the health and well-being of greater Houston’s residents.

The Foundation supports efforts to

  • Understand and communicate the conditions of local waterways, estimate future risks and assess opportunities for improvement;
  • Encourage stakeholders to advance policy and practice change; and
  • Engage communities in efforts to improve water quality, conserve water resources and make informed decisions regarding flooding risks.

Urban Development: Houston Endowment seeks to foster urban environments with sustainable development patterns that provide Houston’s residents with vibrant neighborhoods, access to efficient transportation and safe streets for walking and bicycling.

The Foundation supports efforts to

  • Understand and communicate the conditions of the urban environment, estimate future risks and assess opportunities for improvement;
  • Encourage stakeholders to engage in urban planning and advance policy and practice change;
  • Engage communities in efforts to advocate for sustainable development patterns, efficient transportation and safe streets; and
  • Strengthen the capacity of organizations that carry out strategic urban development efforts.

Houston Endowment may occasionally support special projects that do not align with the Foundation’s targeted areas of focus and preferred approaches, yet meet specific criteria deemed to be of high interest. The Foundation advises grantseekers to communicate with staff prior to submitting a proposal that does not clearly align with stated priorities.
