Application Process

Houston Endowment accepts applications throughout the year and has no designated deadlines for the submission of requests. Applications must be submitted via the online Grant Management System, which can be accessed at the bottom of this screen or by clicking Applicant Login at the top of the screen.

Each submitted application is reviewed and analyzed by members of the Foundation staff, with particular attention given by one or more program officers. Final action is taken by the Board of Directors.

In order to protect the integrity of the grantmaking process, Houston Endowment respectfully requests that applicants and their representatives refrain from contacting Board members regarding pending grant requests. It is Houston Endowment’s policy that Board members refrain from participating in site visits or otherwise engaging with applicants or their representatives regarding pending requests. As always, potential or current applicants with questions are encouraged to contact Houston Endowment staff for referral to the appropriate program officer.

Before beginning a request for funding, applicants should have a clear understanding of the results they seek to achieve and how those desired results align with the Foundation’s vision, mission and priorities. Organizations are strongly encouraged to thoroughly review Houston Endowment’s program areas as the first step in the application process.

Please note the following:

  • Applicants will receive acknowledgment via email confirming receipt of online submissions.
  • The Foundation will contact applicants to request any additional information needed.
  • The staff will not critique proposals or provide feedback about improving grant applications.
  • All applicants will be notified in writing about any actions taken by the Board of Directors.

In some cases, organizations will need to answer a few general questions as the first step in the submission process. This “pre-application” allows organizations to provide basic information so that Foundation staff can ensure alignment with Houston Endowment’s grantmaking interests and restrictions. If there is possible alignment, the organization will be asked to complete the full application. The pre-application is required in any of the following situations:

  • The organization is applying to Houston Endowment for the first time
  • The organization has never received a grant from Houston Endowment
  • The organization has not received a grant from Houston Endowment within the past five years
  • The organization’s last two requests to Houston Endowment have been declined
  • The organization or project is not based in Harris County or its contiguous counties (Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Liberty, Montgomery and Waller Counties)
  • The applicant is routed to the pre-application through the online Grant Management System
  • A Foundation staff person/program officer requests a pre-application

Organizations should submit pre-applications through the online Grant Management System, and will typically receive a response by email within two weeks. The Foundation prefers to receive no more than one pre-application from an organization within a 12 month period.
